London South Bank University committed to LGBTQ+ Equality

Stonewall

The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index is structured on a range of measures that reflect the experiences of LGBTQ+ employees and stakeholders. The index evaluates the steps organisations have taken to ensure that they have effective policies, processes and practices in place, which includes leadership, staff engagement, monitoring, procurement, community engagement, and global inclusion. This achievement shows that LSBU has made significant strides in creating a culture of acceptance, safety and respect for LGBTQ+ individuals.

London South Bank University (LSBU) has participated in the Stonewall index for a number of years now and in 2022 was awarded the prestigious Silver Award in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. The Index is recognised as the UK’s leading benchmark for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion, assessing organisations' efforts to create an inclusive and accepting environment for their LGBTQ+ employees and stakeholders.  A further submission is being planned for the 2024 index.

By achieving the Silver Award, LSBU demonstrated significant progress in its commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion, and we ranked 219 out of the 503 organisations that took part in the Index. In the Education sector, LSBU ranked an impressive 34th. This result is an excellent endorsement of our ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment for all members of our community.

Our university strongly believes that creating an inclusive environment is essential for all members of our community to thrive. LSBU's EDI strategy prioritises creating an environment that allows every individual the freedom to be themselves without fear, and this recognition confirms our commitment to this goal and reinforces our ongoing dedication to achieving equality for all. It is this devotion to inclusion that has enabled LSBU to be acknowledged as a key player in leading the industry towards greater LGBTQ+ equality.

At LSBU, we believe that this recognition will inspire us to continue to strive towards greater equality for all LGBTQ+ individuals and to cultivate a community that values, respects, and celebrates diversity.

Our Action Plan

Our university is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workplace for all staff, including members of the LGBT community. To achieve this, we have developed an LGBT Action Plan based on feedback from Stonewall. This plan outlines specific actions and initiatives that will help create a more supportive and inclusive environment for LGBT staff, including training for managers and staff, reviewing policies and procedures, and identifying potential barriers to inclusion. By implementing these changes, we are working towards a university that is welcoming for all.

LGBTQ+ Staff Network

Our LGBTQ+ Staff Network SoNet work very hard to support and provide a space for individuals to connect with and share ideas. The network supports staff not only through events, such as pride celebrations and social gatherings, but also through their advocacy for policies that help protect the safety and rights of our LGBTQ+ staff members. By working alongside EDI the LGBTQ+ staff network ensures that diverse voices are heard and that policies are inclusive of all employees, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This support network is crucial for creating a safe and welcoming work environment for all staff members.
