Prof. Paul Hayes
Independent Governor
Paul joined the LSBU Board in July 2024. He has recently retired from his role as Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth. Paul has extensive experience of strategic leadership and management, both in a research-intensive environment at the University of Bristol, where he led the School of Biological Sciences, and at the more teaching intensive University of Portsmouth, where he served successively as Dean of Science, PVC Education and Student Experience and DVC.
A biologist by background, Paul is known internationally for his research on marine and freshwater phytoplankton, particularly regarding how they maintain access to the light needed for photosynthesis, and how horizontal gene exchange plays an important role in maintaining competitive advantage. His standing in the field has been recognised through his roles in learned societies where he has served in Society President roles both in the UK and North America.
