Space and Place
This interdisciplinary group is interested in the built and natural environment, and the political, economic and cultural dynamics which shape them.Our group concerned with the way in which space is shaped by cultural, social, economic, and political dynamics. Our areas of research encompass planning, design, geography, urban studies, and education studies. Our group brings together researchers with both professional and academic backgrounds and we are particularly interested in the ways in which academic research can have a direct impact on the human and natural environments.
Research in action:
Through participation in professional networks, research partnerships, knowledge exchange, and consultancy our researchers put their knowledge into action. Previous research projects have included collaborations with planners across Europe (Neil Adams and Phil Pinch), and international stakeholders in urban agriculture (Antonia Noussia).
Areas of Expertise:
Our researchers have interests in topics including: cities, urban politics, housing, environmental planning and climate change, urban design, European planning, planning in the Baltic states, urban agriculture, creative practice, events and creative industries, urban and culture-led regeneration, forest schools and outdoor learning.

Our members have published in leading international journals, including: Geoforum, Urban Geography, Social and Cultural Geography, Regional Studies, Journal of Housing and Built Environment, Journal of Cultural Economy, and the London Journal.

- 2017-2018: ESPON ‘Comparison of European Planning Systems and Territorial Governance’ (COMPASS)
- 2012-2013: ESPON ‘Key Indicators for Territorial Cohesion’ (KITCASP) financed by the ESPON 2013 Programme with partners in the UK (London South Bank University), Ireland (National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis), Iceland (University of Akureyri Research Centre), Latvia (Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences) and Spain (Technical University of Catalonia).
