Business and Economics Insight Research Group
The Business and Economics Insights (BEI) group studies major challenges in the areas of Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Business Management using theoretical and empirical modelling and data-driven decision-making and analysis. Our research encompasses a wide range of specialised topics, including:
- optimisation and operations research
- corporate social responsibility
- financial and economic modelling
- applied macroeconomics
- international business policies
- climate finance
- cultural finance
- fintech
- the impact of political and economic policy uncertainty.
We aim to address these challenges to benefit our local and global communities.
In the realm of Accounting and Finance, our work includes exploring the implications of fintech innovations, climate finance, cultural finance, banking regulations, economic policy uncertainty and the role of higher education in learning accounting and finance principles. We investigate how these factors influence financial markets, corporate governance, and investment strategies, focusing on sustainability and resilience.
OR and Optimisation is another key area of our research, where we apply graph theory and design theory to optimise business and analytics objectives. This includes developing new combinatorial structures, finding innovative solutions to complex problems in operations and logistics and preparing indexes to facilitate the tailoring of optimisation problems.
Our focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) examines how multinational corporations can contribute to sustainable development in developing countries. We analyse the effectiveness of CSR initiatives and their impact on financial performance, community welfare, and environmental sustainability. In addition, we critically review multinational corporations’ CSR Introduction, implementation and evaluation processes in host countries.
Economic and Financial Modelling forms the backbone of our research in understanding the factors influencing financial performance, stock markets, and economic policies. Our studies delve into the dependence between stock markets, household indebtedness and financial fragility and risk modelling in cryptocurrency markets. Our economics research focuses on appropriately identifying the global drivers of inflation and modelling the economic effects of global commodity market shocks, including those from food, energy and metal products.
In International Business Policies, we explore the role of multinational corporations in fostering development, shaping industrial policy, and driving technological advancement. Our research includes analysing regulations concerning foreign direct investment (FDI) and their effects on local development, employment, and technological progress.
Additionally, our group is dedicated to Behavioural Economics and Information Economics, where we adapt existing models and propose new ones to better capture empirical realities and fundamental economic trade-offs. This includes studying the psychological aspects of economic decisions and market behaviours.

To facilitate our research, our group hosts the London Users’ group of programming languages used for analysis. We proudly advocate the use of R by hosting the LondonR users group meetup. Additionally, we organise a Data Science hackathon happening on Saturdays, thanks to our collaboration with Data Science Hackday. These initiatives provide valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange, skill development, and networking among researchers and practitioners, further enhancing our capabilities in data-driven decision making and analysis.
