Ave-Maria E Omoijuanfo, University Foundation, mature student
After encouragement from her family, Ave-Maria decided that she would study for a University Foundation Course at London South Bank UniversityThe course is designed primarily for mature applicants who do not satisfy requirements to start Year 1 of a degree course. The course brings students to a level that allows them to study a degree of their choice in the business, arts, humanities and social sciences.
So much to achieve
After working in retail for three years, Ave-Maria decided to go back to university to pursue a new future. "I felt I had so much I could learn and improve in myself and my qualifications. My family encouraged me a lot to return to education and I thank them for doing so."I think my course was great – from the interesting modules to the tidy lecture rooms and excellent facilities

On the course
The course was comprised of six modules: Quantitative method, Business Skills Using Business Information Systems, Academic communication skills, Business Politics and Society, Introduction to European Society and Thought and Introduction to Business Studies.
"I think my course was great – from the interesting modules to the tidy lecture rooms and excellent facilities. I felt all the modules were important for me to learn and having a clear understanding of each one mattered. I really enjoyed the 'Introduction to European Society and Thought' module, it made me understand Europe more from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment."
"The lecturers for all the six modules were excellent. They really were helpful and explained things to a good level of understanding. Two lecturers I found particularly inspirational were Ms Marie Bune and Mr Stephen Bellas. You also get to meet wonderful students on the course. Everyone is really helpful."
Promising future
Ave-Maria is now hoping that completing a University Foundation Course will be the start of her educational journey to becoming a Psychologist. Importantly, she now feels a more confident person. "Doing the course has enlightened my mind to a lot of things I didn't think I had in me."
Advising new students, Ave-Maria suggests: "I would say be focused and don't get distracted. Try and start on your coursework the minute you get it to avoid a last minute rush. And speak to your personal tutor or lecturers if you are having difficulties with the course. They're happy to help."
