Alessandra Fiorentino, BEng Mechanical Engineering
Meet Alessandra Fiorentino who graduated from LSBU with a first-class honours in BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering. In this interview, she talks about how extracurricular activities such as Formula Student South Bank Racing have fueled her passion for motorsport and given her important career skills.
Why did you decide to study Mechanical Engineering?
My family inspired me to pursue engineering, as they always encouraged my practical and hands-on approach to problem-solving. Attending the SEAT Leon Cupra Cup was another defining moment, as it sparked my passion for motorsport and showed me the crucial role engineering plays in innovation and performance. The opportunity to join Formula Student South Bank Racing as a Powertrain Engineer was a key factor in choosing LSBU.
Why did you decide to study the course at LSBU in particular?
The opportunity to join Formula Student South Bank Racing as a Powertrain Engineer was a key factor in choosing LSBU, as it provided the chance to tackle real-world engineering challenges. Additionally, the university’s well-equipped labs, metal and wood workshops, and extensive library resources were invaluable for my studies.

How will studying at LSBU help you achieve your career goals?
My time at LSBU has been key to preparing me for a career in motorsport. My involvement in Formula Student South Bank Racing allowed me to focus on powertrain engineering, while my final project on 3D printing technologies in automotive sport gave me insight into emerging technologies. The balance of theoretical learning and hands-on experience has equipped me with the skills and confidence to pursue my goals.
What are the benefits of studying/working in Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering offers the opportunity to turn creative ideas into practical solutions. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how engineering impacts fields like motorsport, where even small innovations can lead to significant performance gains. The constant evolution of the field ensures there are always new challenges to tackle and new skills to develop.

What were some of the highlights of your programme?
My final project, which focused on the intersection of motorsport and 3D printing technologies applied to the South Bank Racing car, is a standout experience. I also enjoyed participating in the IMechE Design Challenge, which allowed me to push my creativity even further.
Describe some of the support that was available to you.
LSBU provided excellent resources to support my studies and projects. The library offered a wealth of materials, from books to digital resources, while the labs were equipped with advanced machinery. The metal and wood workshops allowed me to apply my learning practically.
Joining Formula Student is an excellent way to gain real-world experience and develop practical skills.
Do you have any advice for students who are thinking of studying Mechanical Engineering at LSBU?
My advice is to take full advantage of the opportunities LSBU offers. Joining Formula Student is an excellent way to gain real-world experience and develop practical skills, and being part of clubs like Dragone Club can further enrich your engineering experience. Competitions like the IMechE Design Challenge are fantastic for building creativity and teamwork. Make the most of the workshops, labs, and library resources—they will enhance both your learning experience and your career prospects.
