Andreea Alina Apostol- BSc Biomedical Science

Where are you from and which course did you study?
I moved to the UK from Romania and completed my secondary school years in Kent. After finishing 6th form, I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in Biomedical Sciences and moved to London to study at LSBU. I chose LSBU because the well-structured curriculum really stood out to me due to its versatility but most importantly, it ticked all the boxes to become an IBMS accredited degree which many universities in London did not offer at the time. When I was initially applying for this course, my plan was to complete this degree and pursue postgraduate medicine. That said, along the way I found a passion for laboratory work.
Did you do a placement and where was it?
Throughout my time at LSBU, I have gained invaluable laboratory experience across different modules and was fortunate to be selected for a clinical placement. This has allowed me to complete my IBMS registration portfolio and upon completing my degree I will be able to register with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist. Having the hands-on experience through the laboratory sessions has allowed me to expand my practical skills, enabling me to specialise in techniques such as cell culture, viability assays and PCR. In contrast, my clinical experience of completing an NHS placement provided me with insight into the automation, allowing me to transfer my university knowledge into practice.
What is the best thing about LSBU?
Beyond the laboratory work, the support from lecturers has been invaluable for me on this journey. The lecturers on my course have always been very responsive and willing to help whilst providing detailed feedback for each assignment to allow me to improve on my academic writing skills.
What are your plans once you finish your course?
In the future, after completing my degree I plan to apply for my HCPC registration and begin working as a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS. The best thing about my experience at LSBU was getting involved in any opportunities advertised, getting involved with communities and societies at LSBU and using my voice to ignite change as a course representative.
