Barbara Fonseca, MSc Data Science graduate

Meet Barbara Fonseca - an MSc Data Science graduate who is now working at Cogitare Ltd as a Business/Data Analyst. She started her studies at LSBU as a mother to seven-month-old twins, and her determination to succeed carried her through. LSBU supported her along the way with her dyslexia and connected her to her current employer.
When I started university, my twins babies were just 7 months old, which made the journey especially challenging. On top of that, living with dyslexia presented additional obstacles, but it never stopped me from pursuing my goals. Balancing parenting and academics were far from easy, but it was incredibly rewarding to complete my degree just as my twins were about to start school. Despite these barriers, I was able to finish on time and with Honours. This experience not only deepened my knowledge in data science but also strengthened my resilience, determination, and adaptability... qualities that have been invaluable as I transitioned into my professional career.
LSBU connected me with companies they had established recruitment partnerships with, which led to an interview and assessment process with Cogitare Ltd.
I currently work as a Business Data Analyst at Cogitare ltd, a role I obtained through LSBU’s career support. I initially shared my CV with Safia Barikzai at LSBU, who connected me with companies they had established recruitment partnerships with. This led to an interview and assessment process with Cogitare ltd, after which I received an offer to start part-time in my final year of the Data Science course, transitioning to full-time upon graduation.
My interest in Data Science began in my foundation year, when my maths tutor Carrie Rutherford introduced me to this new course that LSBU had. I enjoy subjects related to math and programming and wanted a course with practical applications, which Data Science offered. After researching the possible career paths, I realised this field would also offer flexible work options, which is essential for me as a parent of twins. The possibility of remote work was a significant benefit for balancing my professional and family life.
LSBU's support was exceptional. Tutors offered extra time on assignments and exams and provided assistive tools, which made a huge difference.
LSBU provided outstanding career support, from my early work as a STEM Ambassador, to helping bring a new and inspiring perspective to STEM lessons and career opportunities. During my studies, I gained expertise in Python, SQL, Tableau, Excel, SAS, and Agile methodologies, along with essential courses like Data Mining and ICT Project Management. LSBU’s structure ensured each module prepared me well for the job market.
Despite challenges, such as balancing studies with parenting and dyslexia, LSBU’s support was exceptional. Tutors offered extra time on assignments and exams and provided assistive tools, which made a huge difference. Reflecting on my time at LSBU, I’m incredibly grateful for the supportive community and opportunities, from practical training to engaging in roles like the STEAM Ambassador, making it a truly enriching experience.
This journey has been the foundation for my professional growth and continues to inspire me as I move forward.
Looking back, my time at university was one of the most transformative periods of my life. The challenges I faced, from managing dyslexia to balancing parenting responsibilities, shaped me into a more determined and resourceful person. I am incredibly grateful for the support of my tutors and the opportunities the university provided, which prepared me to step confidently into my career. Completing my degree with Honours was not just a personal milestone but a testament to the fact that with dedication and the right support, it’s possible to overcome any obstacle. This journey has been the foundation for my professional growth and continues to inspire me as I move forward.
