Here’s Caitlyn’s inspiring journey, from the classroom to the courtroom and beyond…
Which course did you choose to study?
I chose to study Law at LSBU because of the emphasis on practical-based learning. As I learn by putting theory to practice, the opportunities offered by LSBU such as the Legal Advice Clinic and the Bar and Mooting Competition have enabled me to gain valuable skills experience that I can apply to future working roles.
What was your inspiration or reasons to study Law?
From a young age, the concept of justice has captivated me! It's a practical necessity for individuals and communities. I’ve always felt that justice, fairness and equity should be accessible to all; yet I’ve learned that these principles are often limited for those who lack the resources to navigate complex legal systems.
How have the course lecturers supported you?
I have found that they are glad to support students with advice by sharing the techniques and qualities that are seen as most attractive to employers in their field. Law lecturers at LSBU have practical experience in their area of Law. Lecturers are generally willing to organise 1-2-1 meetings with students, whether they need further information on course topics or guidance with navigating the next steps of their career.
What skills have you learned or developed at LSBU?
My confidence has primarily developed during my time at LSBU. Like many Law students, I have worked at LSBU’s Legal Advice Clinic as a student legal advisor. I found it extremely beneficial to have first-hand, practical experience of working with clients so early on in my legal career. I competed in The Bar and Mooting Competition in my second year at LSBU and was a finalist in The Supreme Court! I have since become the Vice President of The Bar and Mooting Society and I am currently approaching competing in the second round of an external Criminal Law Moot Competition at 5 Paper Buildings Barristers Chambers.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I aspire to use my knowledge, standing as an advocate for those whose voices go unheard and protect fundamental rights of individuals. My long-term goal is to become a criminal barrister; however, I am planning to work as a paralegal while I save up for the Bar Course.
What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?
Make the most of the facilities LSBU has to offer – use the modern library services to support your studies and build networks with fellow students/professionals. Look out for notifications about upcoming external opportunities and attend events such as career fairs and workshops. Time flies at university so spend it wisely!
