Chi Leung - Msc in Business Project Management

Where are you from and which course did you choose to study?

I relocated to London from Hong Kong to pursue an MSc in Business Project Management. I brought with me several years of professional experience managing projects focused on implementing information systems in commercial environments. Through this experience, I developed a strong understanding of how a systematic and robust project management approach can drive project success. When I decided to advance my education, I chose to specialise in project management to deepen my expertise in this field. LSBU stood out as one of the few universities offering a master’s degree in Business Project Management within its Business School, making it the ideal choice for my academic and professional aspirations.

Tell me about how the course staff have supported you?

The course staff supported and dedicated to enriching my educational journey. Their guidance in academic research not only sharpened my critical thinking but also helped me develop essential skills for academic research. By inviting guest speakers to share insights from the professional world, they bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life application, offering me invaluable perspectives on how my studies relate to actual work environments. Furthermore, their thoughtfully designed, engaging class activities transformed abstract theories into practical experiences, enabling me to apply what I have learned meaningfully.

What skills have you learnt or developed during your time at LSBU?

During my time at LSBU, I gained in-depth, holistic project management skills and stayed up-to-date with the latest industry trends. The course structure systematically equipped me with academic research skills, enabling me to successfully complete my dissertation. Additionally, I acquired essential entrepreneurial knowledge, covering areas such as developing a business idea, setting up a new business, marketing and branding strategies, and exploring funding options.

The library staff played a crucial role in teaching me effective research techniques, helping me hunt the most relevant data and high-quality journal articles for my assignments. By attending academic writing courses and leveraging the expertise of the staff at the Writing Café, I significantly improved my academic writing skills, which I applied across my assignments, presentations, and dissertation.

The Digital Skills Centre staff were instrumental in enhancing my practical proficiency with commonly used applications. They also encouraged me to pursue the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) examinations, through which I earned three MOS certifications within six months. These certifications have strengthened my job applications and boosted my professional profile.

Have you done a work placement or any work experience?

However, during my studies, I had the opportunity to work part-time at the LSBU Business Solution Centre as a Business Solutions Advisor. This centre offers comprehensive support to local small businesses, providing guidance on a wide range of topics including establishing marketing and pricing strategies, leveraging digital marketing, managing finances, and exploring funding opportunities.

As an international student, this experience significantly enhanced my understanding of the UK market landscape across various industries. I was deeply inspired by the passion and dedication of small business owners toward their products and services. It was gratifying to see that these entrepreneurs valued our advice and provided positive feedback, affirming the impact of our work.

Where do you see yourself in the future? What are your goals?

Looking ahead, I will progress my career in project management, building on the knowledge and skills I have developed during my studies. In the long term, I aspire to apply these project management skills within charity organizations, where I can contribute to maximising the impact and efficiency of their services. By effectively planning, coordinating, and managing resources, I aim to help these organizations deliver greater value to their recipients, ensuring that their missions are realized and their outreach expanded.

What advice would you give to people thinking about studying at LSBU?

The best advice I can give to future LSBU students is to actively engage in your learning journey to make the most of your experience. Attend classes in person whenever possible—this is your chance to participate in discussions, exchange ideas with classmates, and ask questions to clear any doubts. Don’t hesitate to seek help; all the course staff are incredibly supportive and always willing to assist with academic questions.

Take the time to connect with your classmates and school mates, especially those from different countries. Learning about their cultures and experiences can broaden your perspective and enrich your understanding. Additionally, make full use of the resources available at LSBU, such as the Digital Skills Centre and the library. These facilities are academic treasure troves waiting to be explored, with staff who are always ready to guide you. By embracing these opportunities, you’ll not only enhance your academic skills but also prepare yourself for a successful future
