Jack Baron - MArch Architecture | London South Bank University

Why did you decide to study Architecture?

From a very young age, I have always had an inventive imagination with a passion for drawing. Having excelled in arts, science, and design & technology subjects at school, I wished to focus my studies on design, and what else is more creatively challenging and rewarding than designing architecture and the built environment.

Why did you decide to study the course at LSBU in particular?

While working full-time at a local architects practice, I was offered the opportunity to continue my studies to work towards becoming an Architect. Unlike many other universities, LSBU offers the RIBA qualification as an established part-time course with real-world project briefs. Not only would this course allow me to continue to work full-time while studying, but it would also enhance my understanding of the industry leading me to succeed in my career.

Where are you working now and what is your role?

Since graduating from London South Bank University, I became a director at two innovative architectural and interdisciplinary practices, before eventually setting up my own architects’ studio earlier this year. Studying at LSBU significantly improved my design skills but also taught me the fundamentals of the architect’s role and responsibilities. The studio is growing from strength to strength, to a point I have recently employed an architectural apprentice to assist me, who is also now studying and excelling her post-graduate architecture degree at LSBU.

What were some of the highlights of your programme.

During my studies, I made many great friends and memories along the way, including an unforgettable trip to Japan!

Describe some of the support that was available to you.

Although any student must be committed to work hard, my experienced tutors were very supportive, pushing me to learn and develop new skills which led me to successfully graduate with a 1st Honors degree. More importantly, every student within each studio supports each other. Whether help with software, technical advice, or general friendly discussions to motivate each other to succeed.

Do you have any advice for students who are thinking of studying Architecture at LSBU?

If anyone is contemplating studying architecture in London, particularly as a part-time or apprenticeship course, London South Bank is the perfect choice to gain the real-world knowledge and skills required to succeed as an architect and potential owner of their own practice.
