Joseph James - BSc (Hons) Product Design and Technology | London South Bank University

Why did you decide to study Product Design?

I’ve always seen design as a harmony between science and art which provides me with a sense of creative fulfilment. I enjoy problem solving and communicating ideas to solve challenges in unique ways. I’ve always been interested in technology too, which helps to push the boundaries of what’s considered possible.

Why did you decide to study the course at LSBU in particular?

I attended open days at various universities to study design, but the atmosphere at LSBU felt more personal and the staff seemed to really care about the course and their students. The workshops and design studios are brilliant facilities with all the machines and technology you need to push your creativity. LSBU’s location is a great benefit too. Having design festivals and exhibitions on your door step really helps with immersing yourself in the subject.

How will studying at LSBU help you achieve your career goals?

The Product Design modules I studied had very varied content and always linked strongly to industry examples. I finished my course feeling confident in software packages key to my work but also helped me to develop lifelong skills such as Design Thinking which helps me to approach challenges creatively.

What are the benefits of studying/working in Product Design?

The skill set you gain from studying a design degree provides you with a lot of flexibility to pivot into different careers. You can often decide to specialise in a specific area later on in your studies based on personal interest and aspirations. For example, if you prefer the more technical route you could pursue engineering. Or, you could pursue a more entrepreneurial route and start your own business based on a design idea you have.

What were some of the highlights of your programme.

The first project that comes to mind is when we built a recumbent bicycle out of bamboo in 4 days! It was a great opportunity to spend time with friends in the workshop and work towards a shared goal.

Also, the final major project you do in the third year is a highlight. It’s the toughest challenge but with the greatest rewards. There’s something exciting (and scary) about being able to design something completely unique that the world has never seen before to solve a problem you really care about.

Describe some of the support that was available to you.

With a higher tutor to student ratio than most design courses, it felt like tutors always had time to provide you with feedback. They took the time to understand your design ideas, listen  and would share relevant inspiration to help your ideas flourish.

Do you have any advice for students who are thinking of studying Product Design at LSBU?

Make the most of the opportunities you have while studying at LSBU and learning from the people around you. Have fun with the briefs you get given and really try to question the narrative. Deliver the expected outcome but in unexpected ways and surround yourself with as much inspiration as possible. It’s a great time to encompass yourself in a subject you enjoy and become passionate about it.
