Kamruzzaman Tanzil, BEng Civil Engineering

Meet Kamruzzan, a Civil Engineering (BEng) graduate from Bangladesh who now works as a Structural Engineer at Mason Navarro Pledge in London. He talks about how studying at LSBU helped him define his career goals, and have given him the tools to help him get there.

Why did you decide to study Civil Engineering?

Growing up, my dream was to be a commercial pilot, and my interest in physics led me toward science. However, a tragic plane crash in 2018 shifted my aspirations, and I chose civil engineering, driven by my passion for physics.

Why did you decide to study the course at LSBU in particular?

I decided to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at London South Bank University due to its strategic location in the heart of London, which provides access to a diverse and dynamic community. LSBU’s central location also offers convenient commuting options, making it highly accessible to students across the city.

The university holds a strong academic reputation, particularly in engineering disciplines.

Its tuition fees are also competitively priced, which makes LSBU a financially viable option for international students. The institution is widely respected for its inclusive environment, attracting students from a variety of cultural and international backgrounds.

Additionally, LSBU is distinguished by its experienced faculty and their dedication to delivering a high standard of education. The university’s emphasis on employability is reflected in its impressive graduate outcomes, equipping students with the skills and connections needed to succeed professionally. For these reasons, I choose LSBU to pursue my studies in Civil Engineering.

How will studying at LSBU help you achieve your career goals?

I had no clear direction for my career, but a module at LSBU turned my interest in structural engineering into a true passion.

I had no clear direction for my career when I began studying civil engineering. After attending lectures at LSBU, I found my interest in structural engineering. During the second year of my university life, a module name Design of Elements turned my interest in structural engineering into a true passion. By following my passion for structural engineering, I gained a deeper understanding of structures.

During my degree, I gained significant experience in both theory and practice. I have developed proficiency in key software such as AutoCAD, Robot, and Revit. My final-year project, “Integrating sustainability into design projects”, allowed me to explore sustainable design practices. These experiences helped me in developing a strong attention to detail, effective problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

One of the most exciting modules of my academic journey was the Group Design Project, led by Simon Leung (Head of Civil and Building Services Engineering). This module, designed to introduce aspiring engineers to the real-world challenges they’ll face, was invaluable in preparing me as professional from a student.
