Krystal Rodrigues- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science

Where are you from and what are you studying?
I moved to London from Doha, Qatar to pursue a degree in Biomedical Science at LSBU. I chose LSBU not only because of its central location in London, but also due to the well-structured, accredited Biomedical Science course it offers. After conducting my research, the course’s facilities and core modules stood out to me, making LSBU my top choice. At the time of applying, I wasn’t sure of my future career, but this course offered the perfect platform as it covered a whole range of modules including human haematology, bioinformatics, microbiology, and clinical immunology, all of which inspired me to study the course.
Tell us about your course, what you learned and your experience at LSBU?
Throughout my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to refine my academic and laboratory skills through scientific experimentation. Being able to conduct experiments in the lab, I was able to gain hands-on experience with techniques such as cell culture, cytotoxic assays, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and more. I also fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to explore the inner workings of an electron microscope. Beyond technical skills, the support I received by the staff in the course was invaluable. Each student was assigned a personal tutor, allowing me to discuss any issues I faced and work through solutions as well. The lecturers were also quick to respond on email and provided constructive feedback for coursework, enabling me to significantly improve my work by my final year.
What's the best part about studying at LSBU?
The best part of my experience at LSBU was undertaking a lab project for my dissertation. This project not only allowed me to deepen my understanding of my project but also allowed me to build new connections with my peers in this course. Collaborating with my peers in this environment was immensely beneficial in sharpening my technical and teamwork skills. This was a vital part of my experience that helped me grow academically, personally, and professionally.
What are your career goals?
Looking ahead, my career goal is to become a scientific project manager, focusing on advancing oncolytic therapies and I am confident that the knowledge and skills gained from this course will enable me to achieve my goals.
