Nancy Castle - BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering | London South Bank University

Why did you decide to study Civil Engineering?
Despite the odds - no family history of university education, no prior exposure to engineers, and no A-levels in maths or physics - I discovered a passion for engineering while pursuing a different degree a few years ago. Whilst studying a Bachelor of Science in Design and Innovation at a different university, I came to the realisation, “How can I innovate anything if I don't know how to engineer it?” That moment sparked a deep obsession with engineering, leading me to switch to Civil Engineering at LSBU. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was important for me to pick a career in which I could learn something new every day and add something positive to society. In my opinion, nothing is better than that.

Why did you decide to study the course at LSBU in particular?

I chose to study at LSBU because of its practical and career focused approach. Additionally, its prime location, just a short walk from London Bridge station, made commuting incredibly convenient. During my second year, the Hub building opened. This became a standout feature, offering a beautiful library, private bookable rooms and computers equipped with Autodesk software. These facilities created the best environment for my studies, making those  challenging times and long nights of work easier.

How will studying at LSBU help you achieve your career goals?

Opportunities to visit construction sites and interact with industry professionals prepares students for the challenges of the working world. Unlike some universities that primarily emphasise academics, LSBU equips students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to excel in their careers.

What are the benefits of studying/working in Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is a meaningful career path that carries significant responsibility and allows you to make a lasting impact on society by shaping the infrastructure we rely on. I feel the greatest benefit of becoming a Civil Engineer is the unique satisfaction of seeing your work take physical form.

What were some of the highlights of your programme.

The Group Design Project was particularly memorable, as we worked together on a redevelopment building and presented our design to industry leaders at WSP. This project encouraged creativity and innovation, I believe these are skills that are often undervalued but are essential for becoming an exceptional engineer.

Describe some of the support that was available to you.

LSBU provided exceptional support throughout my studies, with academic staff consistently going the extra mile to assist students. During tight deadlines, lecturers responded to messages promptly, and on some occasions, even in the early hours of the morning, to answer my questions. Additionally, the Student Life Centre offered a range of support, from CV writing assistance to health and wellbeing services.

Do you have any advice for students who are thinking of studying Civil Engineering at LSBU?

Studying Civil Engineering at LSBU was one of the best decisions I have made. The degree opens doors to a respected and growing industry. My advice is to fully embrace the opportunities LSBU provides—attend the site visits to gain insight into whether contracting or consultancy work suits you, and to deepen your understanding of construction processes. With the incredible support from lecturers, I progressed from GCSE-level maths to earning a First-Class degree in Engineering, achieving results I once thought impossible. If you’re considering Civil Engineering, I would strongly recommend LSBU.
