Sarah Trieu - Craft Bear Studios

Tell us about your business.

Craft Bear Studios makes cute, crocheted items, including plushies, keyrings and accessories. They’re each individually handmade with love and unique in their design. Our mission is to bring comfort and joy through the little things in life.

What is the problem or need you are looking to address and how does your business idea meet this need?

The world is hectic, and our lives can be so busy. It’s so important to set aside time and space for ourselves. Craft Bear Studios can provide the perfect support companion for comfort and cuddles. Whether you’re at home or on the go, squish the plushie and remember to take a breath and enjoy the little things in life.

What inspired your idea and business?

Initially, it all started with animal headbands. I made them with the intention of just making a cute, whimsical set, but then realised I could spread a little joy through my creations. I crocheted a lot already since it was a great way for me to destress. It was almost second nature to me by the point I started Craft Bear Studios. Crochet brings me so much comfort and joy, and this is something I want to share with others.

What has been the best part of your entrepreneurial journey?

The best part of this journey has been building a community. When I started, I didn’t know anyone. Now, it’s different. By the end of 2024, I will have participated in a total of 10 markets. I am so happy to have met so many supportive people through this journey – from returning customers to other small business owners. Seeing the smiles Craft Bear Studios can bring is so uplifting.

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs just starting their journey?

Don’t be discouraged by setbacks! One of my first markets, I was overshadowed by a neighbouring stall and did poorly that day. However, through consistently turning up at my local market, I’ve managed to build a community that returns to my stalls and supports me each time. When I first opened an Etsy, I had barely any sales. However, I realised that my products sell better in person. Instead of wasting money on Etsy promotion, I now know to focus my efforts on getting into more markets. It might sound cliché, but when one door closes, another one opens. There’s something to learn from every setback.

What support would be most beneficial for your business at this stage? What are you looking for help on?

There are many details I’m still trying to finetune, such as polishing my website, setting up email marketing, and learning product photography and social media. I think these are things I will have to chip away at and the program at LSBU has been great for learning and support in these areas.

I’ve been thinking about the direction I want to take my business. I think I’d like to build a stronger community. This begins through email marketing and social media, but in the future, I think I’d like to start hosting workshops. I just have no idea where to start, such as finding a venue, promoting the event, sourcing materials, and how to structure the actual workshop.
