Why did you decide to study Computer Science/Information Technology?
I’ve always been curious about how things work—especially in math and science—but I never imagined the world of possibilities in Computer Science until I joined LSBU. Before university, computers were just for gaming (and trust me, I was good at that!). But coming to LSBU opened my eyes to how technology shapes the future. I fell in love with solving problems, building systems, and, let’s be honest, the satisfaction of seeing my code work! It’s like solving a puzzle where I get to create the pieces.
Why did you decide to study the course at LSBU in particular?
When I saw what LSBU had to offer, there was no out-of-the-way decision to study Computer Science at LSBU. Mainly, what I needed was state-of-the-art facilities, such as computer labs and a library, especially as an international student. When my own computer broke, the resources at LSBU became my lifeline. It wasn't all about the tech, though-what really sold it to me were the amazing tutors. Open door, helping hand, and encouragement-they all made me feel like I could do anything. LSBU wasn't just a university; it was a support system, and I knew right then that it was where I needed to be for growth!
What are the benefits of studying/working in Computer Science/IT?
Oh, where do I begin? Being in Computer Science is like having the ultimate VIP pass to geek heaven! Here’s the fun part:
- Books and other learning resources fully free: Imagine a buffet-sized helper in learning everything that you want to learn, no longer needing to go empty your wallet in bookstores.
- Access to software premium: Why pay to get fancy programs when you can just unlock the real keys to the software kingdom? Photoshop, tools for coding-you name it, we have it.
- Career fairs. You get into speed dating with employers, except that the end result was not romance but a job (maybe a few solid LinkedIn connections).
- Epic Events: AI boot camps, hackathons, and workshops, all of which put you in the mode as if you are training to save the world or at the very least, debug it.
- High-heavy computers: Forget slow, old machines. We're talking high-speed, high-spec monsters that make coding and Netflix (sshhh!) a breeze.
- Cutting-edge research: You are willing to change the future by working on more innovative projects and leaving your footprints!
Basically, Computer Science has been a roller coaster ride through opportunities, knowledge, and gut-feeling tech wizardry and in all honesty, I'd not trade it for anything!
What were some of the highlights of your studies?
It all began in my first year when I met Safia Barikzai and joined her CSI team as a student ambassador. At the time, I was still battling imposter syndrome, feeling like I didn’t quite belong in this world of tech geniuses. But being part of that team changed everything. I wasn’t just learning about computers anymore—I was learning about myself. I started finding opportunities I never thought I’d have, and for the first time, I felt like I was exactly where I was meant to be.
Then there was the LSBU library—my sanctuary. Picture this: cozy sofas, endless books, high-speed computers, and an environment that just screams, “You can do it!” It wasn’t just a place to study; it became my second home, where I pulled off my best all-nighters and discovered a love for learning I never knew I had.
The tutors? Oh, they deserve their own standing ovation. One name that stands out is Aarbaz Alam—my mentor, guide, and occasional superhero. Whenever I felt stuck, stressed, or just
downright defeated, I’d knock on his door (sometimes figuratively, sometimes literally), and he always had the perfect advice to get me back on track.
Fast forward to the moment I landed my first job as an IT Advisor at Solutionise. This was HUGE for me. With the confidence and skills I gained at LSBU, I stepped into the professional world, and let me tell you, it felt amazing.
Then there were the events—AI boot camps, career fairs, and workshops that felt like stepping into the future. Every session was like opening a treasure chest of knowledge and connections, showing me just how far I could go.
Through all these experiences, I grew from a nervous first-year student into someone my juniors now look up to for advice. Every step of this journey felt like a little victory, and together, they’ve made my time at LSBU unforgettable.
Describe some of the support that was available to you.
The support at LSBU? Let me tell you—it was like having an all-star team cheering me on every step of the way.
First, there were the tutors—absolute legends. They weren’t just teachers; they were mentors, life coaches, and sometimes even therapists! I could email them, meet them after lectures, or even just have a chat when things got tough. Whether it was coursework help, career advice, or even battling homesickness, they always had my back.
The Moodle leaders were another gem—they never got tired of answering my endless questions. Submitting coursework, understanding requirements, or just reviewing feedback—whatever I needed, they were always there to help.
And I can’t forget the mental health support. As an international student, I had moments of doubt and stress. But talking to my tutors or using the university’s resources made a world of difference. It wasn’t just about solving problems—it was about feeling heard.
Finally, the career services and events were top-notch. Regular career fairs, workshops, and AI boot camps gave me the confidence and skills to land my role as an IT Advisor and dream bigger.
Honestly, the support system at LSBU wasn’t just helpful—it was transformative. It turned challenges into stepping stones and made me feel like I could conquer anything.
