Off-The-Job Learning
Apprenticeships must last a minimum of 12 months and involve off-the-job training. This off-the-job training requirement is measured over the course of an apprenticeship (as opposed to over an academic year). The off-the-job training is an essential part of an apprenticeship and therefore must take place during employed time.
Off-the-job training is defined as learning which is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of an apprenticeship. This can include training that is delivered at the apprentice’s normal place of work but must not be delivered as part of their normal working duties. The off-the-job training must be directly relevant to the apprenticeship standard, teaching new knowledge, skills and behaviours required to reach competence in the particular occupation.
What this includes:
- The teaching of theory (lectures, simulation exercises, online learning etc.)
- Practical training (shadowing, mentoring, industry visits, attendance at conferences)
- Learning support and time spent writing assignments
What this does not include:
- Progress reviews
- Training which takes place outside of apprentice's paid working hours
- Training to acquire skills, knowledge and behaviours that are not required in the apprenticeship standard.
All off-the-job training must take place during paid hours. Apprentices may choose to spend additional time on training outside their paid hours, but this must not be required to complete the apprenticeship. We will provide a means of tracking the off-the-job by way of an online portfolio.
Mandatory E-Learning Module
All apprentices, that have access to APTEM, must complete a new Aptem e-learning module. This module has been developed by LSBU working with external colleagues to provide you with the best opportunity to progress and achieve. The short training will cover the following: What is an apprenticeship, what's the standard and KSBs and how to develop them in the workplace, what is endpoint assessment, what is off-the-job learning, safeguarding, Prevent and British Values.
This short training will take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. It is compulsory and we will monitor compliance with this.
The training is available as a task in your learning plan. Please log in to Aptem, locate the Apprenticeship Essential Knowledge task in your Learning Plan, and follow the instructions to complete it. Please ensure that you record the completion of the module on Aptem.
If you do not have access to Aptem please check the junk/spam inbox of your personal email for an activation link, if you are unable to locate this please contact apprenticeships@lsbu.ac.uk

Personal Development Plan: understanding apprentices’ needs
Proactive, personalised and insight generating - the personal development plan for apprentices is a survey that apprentices take at regular intervals throughout their time with us. It helps us understand what apprentices’ needs are.
No one feels confident about all areas of academic and student life at first. It's normal to want to find out more about different aspects of support and to make the most of the services available to them, as and when they need them – which is where the Personal Development Plan (PDP) comes in.
The Personal Development Plan allows apprentices to maximise their success, realise their potential and achieve their goals. The PDP consists of a series of questions to help assess their areas of need, with a bespoke action plan generated once they have submitted their responses.
Apprentices don't have to complete it all in one go, and they can update it at different times during their apprenticeship journey, so their plan grows and develops as they do.
How to complete the PDP
To access the Personal Development Plan:
- Apprentices to log in to their MyAccount (if they haven't already done so)
- select the 'MY SUPPORT' tab from the top of the MyAccount homepage
- select the 'Get what you need: Personal Development Plan' panel
- from here, they will be able to complete the survey questions or update their existing answers and save their changes.
The PDP survey is divided into three sections:
- About you
- Strengths and areas for development
- Your goals.
Each section of the survey contains a series of statements for apprentices to respond to, from 'strongly agree' to 'strongly disagree'. Once they have submitted their responses, they will be able to view their Personal Development Plan. This might include links to helpful resources, or a task to book an appointment with one of our teams.
Apprentices will also be able to see responses summarised in a personal development chart, which is a handy way to see how confident they are in each area, as well as how this might change over time.
Progress Reviews
This is a reminder that you must book your Progress Reviews with your skills coach. Apprenticeship Progress Reviews must take place every 12 weeks as a minimum, as a requirement of the Apprenticeship Funding. If you are unsure of your skills coach, please contact your course director.

Changing jobs whilst on an Apprenticeship
If you are looking to move employer, you MUST reach out to the Apprenticeship Team prior to accepting the job offer to ensure the new employer has the infrastructure and understands the legal and financial responsibility of working with the apprentice and LSBU.
Apprentice Attendance Logging
This a reminder that apprentices are responsible for logging their attendance on campus by using their ID cards to access buildings and my LSBU App to ‘check in’ to lectures.
Although some Lecturers may take paper-based registers (which apprentices are encouraged to sign), the app check-in system is used to generate attendance reports that are shared during reviews and with employers.
