Overview

This course aims to prepare registered practitioners for their role within renal health care. They will have the opportunity to develop and critically evaluate specialist nephrology and dialysis knowledge and skills in order to deliver high quality care. The course is suitable for any nurse or AHP who is currently working in a renal service (pre-dialysis; nephrology dialysis or transplantation). The course will run over 12 study days (consecutive Tuesdays commencing 08 March 2020) and can be studied at either at level 6 or level 7 (40 credits).

Entry requirements 

  • Registration on a professional register. The course is suitable for any nurse who is currently working in a renal service (pre-dialysis; nephrology, dialysis or transplantation) and has a minimum of 6 months post-registration experience in a related area of practice
  • Level 6: 120 credits at level 5 or equivalent. 

 

Career benefits

All students on this module will be employed within a renal unit. This module will provide an impetus for the student to remain within the renal care speciality, as successful completion of the module will enhance the likelihood of promotion, especially from Band 5 to Band 6. There is a national need for registered nurses competent in renal nursing skills, especially haemodialysis.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:     

  • Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology pertinent to kidney disease and appreciate the physical, psychological, social and economic impact of the condition on the patient and family.
  • Identify the most appropriate interventions to enable effective self-management of the condition.
  • Understand how to critically appraise the management of care of those with kidney disease.

Intellectual skills:

  • Select and critically evaluate relevant research and national/international guidance in order to promote evidence-based practice within the renal setting.
  • Critically discuss current resources in determining health care strategies for clients within the kidney care setting. 

Practical Skills:

  • Develop and critically review skills and competence in the holistic care of the patient and family. 

Transferable skills:

  • Explore quality improvement methodology and critically explore how to plan, implement and evaluate a service improvement project related to kidney care.
  • Utilise knowledge and create responses to problems that expand/redefine existing practice in order to effect change within the renal setting.
